Displaced Energy Worker Dependent Transition Scholarship Program

  • A few important things to note: The dependents of anyone laid off from a coal mine or power plant since September 15, 2016 are eligible for this scholarship. The dependents remain eligible even if the parent has found other employment.  And even if the child was in seventh grade when their parent was laid off and they just graduated last year, they are eligible.

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

    • Have a parent who was laid off because their coal mine or fossil fuel power plant closed or reduced operations on or after September 15, 2016.
    • Must be U.S. citizens, certain eligible noncitizens, or meet undocumented student criteria under the RISE Act.
    • Must be enrolled (or accepted) at least part-time (minimum of 3 credit hours) at a public college or university in Illinois and demonstrate financial need.
    • Be deterred by financial considerations from completing an educational program at the Illinois public university or community college of choice, as shown by there being an unmet need in your financial aid package. (I've been told that simply applying for the scholarship is showing proof of the need)
    • Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
    • Establish satisfactory repayment arrangements if you are in default on any federal student loan.
