Coffeen is always improving and implementing new programs to ensure success of our students. Here are some of the programs we currently adhere to at Coffeen.
Reading to the Rescue is a joint effort between Coffeen School and Montgomery County Animal Shelter. Kindergarten thru 5th grade students weekly visit the shelter and read to the animals who are awaiting adoption.
This type of program has been piloted across the nation and found to be beneficial to children in strengthening reading strategies, as well as soothing and calming the animals, making them more “adoptable” from the positive interaction with children.
Response to Intervention-We commit to having the highest expectations for ALL students. To ensure the success of our goal, we use ‘Response to Intervention’, ‘Positive Behavior Supports’, and the ‘No Excuses’ Philosophy. Click on the attached links or contact your child’s teacher for more information on these programs. y levels receive high quality support matched to individual needs and goals. Individual progress is monitored frequently to insure that instruction is having the desired effect. If students are not making progress with one instructional approach, the intervention is changed and more targeted and intensive support is provided.
Our Research Based Behavior Intervention Model is agreed on school wide by Coffeen Elementary School. We use Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) as a tool for teaching expected behaviors. This is a proactive program teaching expectations before misbehavior occurs. The students recognize these expectations as “Respectful, Responsible and Safe”.
We teach READING and WRITING instructional activities for a minimum of 90 minutes daily, using the comprehensive 90 Minute Model. Balanced Literacy is the core of our language arts program, and systematic strategies are used to promote comprehension and critical thinking. Students also participate in a minimum of 45 minutes of MATH instructional activities daily. SOCIAL STUDIES and SCIENCE are daily integrated into our reading, writing, and math programs.
In addition to our core academic curriculum, we offer physical education, music, art, and a library class weekly.
