New News--Did You Know?

Leadership Updates:
The Board of Education approved the hiring of Dan Stewart as Junior High Principal and Athletic Director.  In addition, they hired Ben Cunningham as Junior High Assistant Principal.  Excited for both leaders to their new roles and look forward to a great year. 

Preparing for the 2026-2027 School Year:

  • Expanded bullying and cyberbullying language and parent notification procedures.
  • Updated cell phone expectations at the junior high and high school (Away for the Day at HJHS and lunch only use at HHS)
  • Backpack policies requiring students to use lockers (with exceptions for medical or IEP needs).
  • Additional school bus safety expectations.
  • Updates to parking procedures, athletic code language, and grading practices at the high school.

The Board approved fees for the upcoming school year, including:

  • A simplified high school registration fee structure.
  • A student parking permit fee for the paved high school parking lot.
  • Updated facility rental fees for certain outside organizations.
  • Increased athletic official pay to remain competitive with neighboring schools.

Facilities and Athletics:
The Board approved a new digital scoreboard project for the high school competition gym using previously awarded grant funds. The project will modernize the gym, include required shot clocks, and complement other planned facility improvements.

The Board also approved a new five-year agreement with the City of Hillsboro for continued use of the Hillsboro Sports Complex for district athletic programs.

The Board also considered additional coaching positions. Junior high softball and baseball assistant positions will be posted in the next few days. The personnel committee will meet to review additional programs to determine the need based on student participation, contests, and current coaching staff. Programs of specific interest include the high school wrestling and junior high and high school track.

Upgrades Across the District:

  • Beckemeyer:  parking lot and cabinetry in selected classrooms
  • Coffeen: classroom updates 
  • HCCDC: progress on the new facility
  • Junior High: old gym painting project
  • High School: sidewalks, student lot, and drainage work

 

 

 

As of Tuesday, December 11, 2025 School Board Meeting:  

Transition to Latin Honors:
The board approved a three-year transition to the Latin Honors system for HHS graduation. The Class of 2029 will be the first to graduate under this system.

Honors GPA Requirement:
The board approved increasing the GPA requirement for honors recognition to a 3.5 or higher. This aligns with the new Latin Honors framework and will take effect this year.

10-Point Grading Scale:
Beginning next school year, HHS will adopt a 10-point grading scale. This will help align our grading practices with surrounding districts.

New Courses Added:
The board approved the addition of three new courses for HHS:

  • AP American Government --Mr. Lunz
  • Sculpture --Ms. Kumlin
  • Guitar --- Mr. Drake
