| COURSE DESCRIPTION: |
The Hillsboro High School Choir is a performance group. In this class, students are required to participate in scheduled performances given by the director. By performing, students gain experience and appreciation for proper vocal techniques, concert etiquette, and different genres of vocal music. Choir students will attend functions outside of school that will provide opportunities to grow as musicians, such as I.M.E.A., The Greenville College High School Festival, Solo and Ensemble Competition, and Organizational Contest. Class time will consist of vocal warm-ups, sight singing exercises, and rehearsal of music. Concert students will also study the symbols, terminology, and notation of music. Additional classroom assignments will involve journaling and concert critiques. Over all students will develop an understanding and an appreciation for the art. |

| COURSE DESCRIPTION: |
The first quarter consists of marching band activities. During this time, techniques in music execution, and marching will be covered in both written theory, and performance (both football halftime show and parade). The second quarter consists of pep band and concert band literature study and performance to develop musical technique and an appreciation for various types of instrumental band music. Knowledge of pitch and sight-reading skills will be assessed. A Christmas concert, and basketball pep band performances will be presented. Individual music parts will be taught and checked for all performances. Throughout the entire first semester, bi-weekly band sectionals will be held for instruction on all music. Extra credit opportunities for individual performance exist in the form of the All-District Band Festival, the German Band, and the Christmas Brass. Mid-term quarter, and semester exams will be administered to measure individual student achievement. The third quarter consists of pep band and concert band performances again. Individual extra credit performances include the IHSA solo/ensemble contest, and the All-Area Band Festival. Indvidual knowledge of large-group sight-reading, scales/percussion rudiments, and band history will be presented. The fourth quarter continues with concert band performance/techniques. Students will be taught about and analyze various forms of instrumental music. Students will also learn about acoustics and musical production. Performances will consist of the IHSA Organizational contest, the spring concert, and graduation. Again, band sectionals for the purpose of individual instruction will be presented on a biweekly basis. Mid-term quarter, and semester exams will be administered to measure individual student achievement. Band performances are of a mandatory attendance nature. Elective performances are not mandatory. Some weekend and nighttime participation is necessary. |

| COURSE DESCRIPTION: | The Drill Team is open to students upon successful completion of an audition. The first quarter consists of marching band activities. During this time, techniques in marching and prop work will be covered in both written theory, and performance (both football halftime show and parade). Students will be expected to develop sufficient technique on their equipment so as to be able to perform routines of medium to advanced difficulty with the marching band. Members will be expected to develop the physical skills of coordinating movement to music, developing sensitivity, pride, and overall unity with the group to work for a common goal of excellance. The Drill Team meet daily with the marching band, and members are expected to attend one weekly after-school rehearsal. Individual student abilities will be assessed by the directors, along with mid-term, quarter, and semester exams. All performances of the Drill Team are mandatory. |

We will discuss music from the Medieval Periods to the music you listen to today. |
